Note on scale: Most departments use a 5 point scale for their ratings. Unless the description on the page says otherwise, these evaluations use a 5 point scale with 5 as the highest score. For all departments, a higher number indicates a more favorable rating.

Standard deviations are listed for some departments. ASM reports the means of responses for different questions on course evaluations. That is, we report the average score for all students who submitted course evaluations for a given course and professor. The standard deviation is a statistic that tells you how tightly all the various responses are clustered around the mean. The same number can be an average of wildly different responses, or it can be an average of responses that are all about the same, or anything in between. When the responses are pretty similar and most students gave responses close to an average, the standard deviation will be small. When the responses are very different, and students gave all kinds of responses to a question, then the standard deviation will be relatively large.

Courses rating that we tend to report include how interesting students found the class, how well the material was presented, how responsive the faculty member was to students, and an overall course rating.
